Your Training / Work Based Learning

► Types of Training

Work based learning (sometimes called training) is a way to get a qualification while learning to do a job. Most people think of apprenticeships as one of the choices for after year 11, but in most jobs there will be some element of job specific training alongside work.

The main ways to get training are:

Steps for Success
Training at level 1 and below which might include a work placement and development opportunities such as employability skills or personal effectiveness.

Apprenticeships /Advanced Apprenticeships
Training at Level 2 which includes paid employment, a course of study leading to an academic qualification at Level 2 and key skills. Advanced Apprenticeships - Training at Level 3 which has the main elements of an apprenticeship but includes supervisory responsibility.

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ’s)
Work based training available at levels 1-5 which assesses work competencies but does not have a linked course of study.
