Jobs in Art and Design require a talent for creativity and skills drawing and use of colour. Many artists are self-employed and work alone producing work for exhibition and sale. Designers combine artistic creativity with applied skills and can be employed across a wild range of job roles in many industry sectors working on anything from packaging and CD covers to magazine advertising. The sort of skills needed for design jobs are: the ability to work to deadlines, team work and attention to detail.

►Cartoonist

Both cartoonists and illustrators rely on their drawing skills to bring a story to life .A cartoonist uses images to relay a message either in a single image often found in newspapers or in a storyboard format found in cartoon strips and comics. Illustrators use images to illustrate a story with images they may also illustrate book covers. There are specialist careers in illustration such as architectural illustration, archaeological illustration or medical illustration.

►Conservation of Works of Art

Art conservation is a scientific as well as an artistic role .A conservator must understand the aging process for works of art, how pigments are created and the methods that can be used to extend their life. The work has 2 distinct roles: Conservation which explores ways to preserve the object and restoration where damage is repaired and missing parts replaced. Most art conservation and restoration takes place in art galleries, museums and private collections.

► Designer Craftspeople

Craft designers produce designs for and then make products, because they are hand made the products are often original one-off pieces. Craftspeople may produce furniture, ceramics, glassware, knitwear, jewellery and fashion. They may work for a customer to their requirements or produce pieces for sale through shops and galleries.

►Display

Display jobs (sometimes called visual merchandising) involve presenting products or ideas in an attractive and eye-catching way. Most retail outlets will use display to present their products both on the shop floor and in the window. These jobs often involve a team of staff who work from the designers ideas. Other display jobs can involve designing exhibition and promotional stands or displays for public places such as museums and galleries.

►Fashion Design

Fashion designers may design clothes, shoes or accessories.They need to have a good understanding of: how the body moves, colour; texture and pattern; trends in fashion and the market for their clothes. Designers may work for fashion houses, ready to wear designers or high street manufacturers. There may also be jobs in TV and theatre costume design or as a fashion stylist.

►Fine Art

Fine Art is the production of works of Art such as painting, sculpture, installations, etc from the concepts of an artist. It is art which is produced for artistic and creative purposes rather than for any functional purpose. Fine art is a ‘talent’ career you must have artistic or creative shills to be successful. Artists mainly work for themselves producing pieces but may work on commission for customers.

►Graphic Design

Graphic designers present information visually through use of photographs, layout and word art. Jobs are available in advertising, packaging, website design, magazines, and promotional materials .A graphic designer may work closely with a customer to develop an idea into a finished product. There are also careers available at assistant level.

►Interior Design

Interior designers are usually freelance; they take on individual contracts for a customer. They may work closely to develop an understanding of the client and the space in which their designs will be used. Interior designers must be able to look at a 3:dimensional space and visualise how furnishings, colour, shapes and themes would fit. They must be able to follow a design brief, working to deadlines and within a budget.

►Model Making

Model Makers produce 3 dimensional models of designs on a small scale of buildings and products so that the overall look can be seen. These are usually for architects to show a building or development in the environment, for products so that they can be viewed and tested or for theatre or television to see how a set may look. Model makers must have excellent hand skills and the ability to work from a scale drawing.

►Photography

Photography is part of many industries for example: medical photography, police work, advertising, newspaper or magazine work, fashion photography and graphic design .Photographers may be self employed specialising in one type of work or may work as part of a creative team. Newspapers may expect their journalists to also provide photos to support their stories.Many photographers also work in video or DVD production.

►Product Design

Almost everything in your home or school will have been designed; from the kettle in your kitchen to your bed, from your mobile phone to the chair you are sitting on. Product designers have to consider not only how a product looks but its, comfort, usability, safety, etc.They must also understand the manufacturing process to ensure that the design can be made within the budget available.

►Textile and Surface Design

Textile and surface designers design fabric prints and textures for clothing and home furnishing; wallpaper, gift:wrap and packaging; carpets and wall or floor tiles. They need to have a good understanding of how print patterns are formed, fit together and the processes such as screen print on used in production. The may work on computer or use drawing skills for work based with fashion or textile manufacturers.
